Second warmest summer for U.S. and Third for Globe

Tip via Jeff Masters that the new climate data is out for August. The results: Third warmest summer on record for the planet and the second for the U.S. As for NC, it was rather warm at times. Some might even say hot. August was for sure.

Bogs, savannas, mountaintop mining and Land for Tomorrow

Cross-posted from Exile, this on bogs and savannas and more from my column.

Last night, the future Florence drifted about 60 miles to the west of where forecasters predicted it would be. [...]

Hurricane predictions lowered

Hmmmmm. On the heels of the latest storm, Bill Gray revises the outlook for the rest of the Tropical Storm season. Lots of charts and tables and stuff. September should be above average, he says.
Meanwhile,
• Jeff Masters on Ernesto, John, Ioke and some waves coming off Africa.
• Whole mess of flood watches for NC. And [...]
